In the 1990s, the Netherlands included Soil conservation in greenhouses in its laws and regulations. The Netherlands began to adopt the cultivation mode of soilless cultivation nutrient solution circulation, and the production of cultivation tanks in multi span greenhouses also developed rapidly. A cultivation trough is a planting substrate and plant support structure that can isolate the ground and substrate, cut off the spread of soil borne diseases, and guide excess nutrient solution into the recycling and reuse system. It is a type of equipment suitable for large-scale and efficient production of soilless cultivation. Grow gutter and its supporting closed irrigation and fertilization system can avoid soil continuous cropping obstacles, secondary salinization, and the spread of soil diseases and pests, protecting the soil environment. The cultivation tank is mainly suitable for substrate cultivation, commonly used substrates include rock wool, coconut bran, etc.

Growth gutters are divided into two categories based on materials: steel and polypropylene.

Steel style grow gutter
The thickness of steel type grow gutter is generally 0.6~0.8mm, with a height of 90~120mm and a width of 100~400mm. The length can be customized according to the size of the greenhouse, ensuring that there are no joints in the middle and avoiding the leakage of nutrients at the joints. The grow gutter is double-sided galvanized, with the outermost layer covered with a polyester coating. The polyester coating is a non-toxic and airtight polyester material that can protect the grow gutter from corrosion by nutrient solutions and extend the storage time of recycled nutrient solutions. Therefore, steel type grow gutters have the characteristics of light material, good toughness, corrosion resistance, and long service life.
The matrix bag is placed directly on the support surface of the grow gutter, and excess nutrient solution can flow into the guide channels on both sides of the grow gutter through the cutting edge on the matrix bag along the support surface. The recovered nutrient solution can be reused as irrigation water after disinfection and sterilization. The size of the water channel is determined based on the maximum drainage amount during the growth period of the plant, to meet the drainage needs of each stage of the plant.
